EKAA

After the Sacred Thread Foundation's work with various Wayuu indigenous communities in La Guajira, Colombia, over the past five years, it has become clear that there is a lack of easy access to basic and nutritionally valuable products within these communities. Malnutrition is high among some families, especially children. The communities are scattered across the territory, and transportation for purchasing food and basic products is expensive, making it difficult to maintain proper nutrition and improve the population's nutrition.

This community is located in northern Colombia, in the Guajira region. The Wayuu Indigenous people are found throughout the region in remote areas where there is no access to electricity or water. Fifty-three percent of the population lives in poverty, and 24.8% in extreme poverty.

Thus, the EKAA (soup kitchen in Wayuuunaiki) community store aims to create a community-based productive project where families will have access to basic products at market prices without having to travel. The store's objective is to promote community work, access to nutritious foods, and improved community nutrition.

The crisis unleashed by the coronavirus has left thousands of families without a livelihood and without the ability to feed their families.

The Sacred Thread Foundation seeks to assist these families through the creation of EKAA, a community store where all product donations will be channeled to deliver basic food, hygiene, and water kits to the neediest families in the coming weeks. Communities will be able to access these kits in exchange for crafts, animals, or community service, with the goal of creating sustainability for the project for future food purchases.

As part of this project, we also plan to raise goats and create a poultry farm so each store can produce its own eggs and goat meat.

For its installation, the community itself must provide the location where it will be installed. Subsequently, a Community Committee will be formed, which will appoint a manager and oversee the point of sale. The Supply Committee itself will define the list of products to be sold.
