Ekaa

After the work for the last 5 years undertaken by the Fundación Hilo Sagrado to different communities of indigenous Wayúu in La Guajira, Colombia, the lack of easy access to basic products and nutritional value within the communities has been seen. The high degree of malnutrition in some families, especially children. The communities are dispersed in the territory and the transportation for the purchase of food and basic products is expensive, which hinders the good diet and nutritional improvement of the population.

This community is located in the North of Colombia, in the region of La Guajira. The Wayúu members are all located across the region in remote areas where there is no access to electricity and water. 53% of the people live in poverty and 24.8% in extreme poverty.

Thus, the EKAA (eat-in Wayunaiki) community store aims to create a community project where families will have access to basic products at market prices without displacement. The objective of the store is to promote community work, access to nutritional food and nutritional improvement of the communities.

The crisis unleashed by the coronavirus has left hundreds of families without sustenance and without the possibility of feeding their family.

The Fundacion Hilo Sagrado seeks to assist these families through the creation of Ekaa,  a community store, where all donations of products that will be used for the delivery of basic kits of food, cleaning, and water will be channeled to the families in the coming weeks. Communities will be able to access these kits in exchange for crafts, animals or community work, in order to create sustainability in the project.

As part of this project, the raising of goats and the creation of a chicken coop are also thought, so that each store can produce its own eggs and goat meat.

The communities must provide the premises where it will be installed. Subsequently, the Community Committee will be formed, which must appoint a manager and monitor the point of sale. The same Supply Committee will define the list of products to be commercialized.
